Honoria recounts the fate of two women. One, our contemporary narrator, lives in London and strives to forget her disastrous marital relationship by immersing herself, on the advice of a film producer, in readings on the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It is in this way that she encounters the second: Honoria, a Roman princess of the 5th century AD. A legendary figure for specialists of late Antiquity, whose life is only known in fragments and flashes. Honoria comes from a twilight century, which is also the advent of a new world: the barbarian invasions and the spread of Christianity. This period of upheaval remains a little-explored, and therefore intriguing, mystery.
With lively and acerbic humor, the narrator recounts the progress of her investigation and gradually unveils the dark and hidden facets of History. She gains access to the shreds of Honoria's destiny left by time. This princess, sister of an emperor, has been mistreated by ancient chroniclers who depict her as a "diabolical, nymphomaniac, Messalina-like creature, the gravedigger of the Empire." The task now is to wrest her life from oblivion and conduct a counter-investigation.
One becomes attached to the irresistible Honoria, of whom even her mother says: "You are gifted for love. A man would become your plaything. Even our eunuchs are all under your charm!" Indeed, one falls under the charms of this rebellious, flamboyant and debauched woman who, amidst the barbarian invasions and Christianity becoming the state religion, dares everything: to love a Freedman, and even to ask Attila for her hand in marriage! While her world is disintegrating in cruelty, Honoria must take flight: the emperor wants her dead. She has transgressed the established order. And what if Honoria were the first modern woman? One thing is certain: one does not encounter Honoria without being transformed and liberated.
Affinities are woven between the author and her model, transcending the centuries. Both dare to tell their stories, seem to reveal themselves in a mirror. From tragic grandeur, we move on to the tone of confidentiality and intimacy. Judith Housez is an outstanding portraitist, who brilliantly juggles between the historical epic and autofiction, between History and contemporary comedy, with a delicate and refined writing style.
