Honoria Lawrence's Journals: India Observed 1837-1854
At the age of twenty-eight, Honoria, a woman of strong character and conviction brought up in Ireland as one of a large family, set off for India to marry a man whom she had last seen nine years before. Her husband, Sir Henry Lawrence, a highly respected administrator of the Punjab and hero of Lucknow, travelled widely in India, accompanied by Honoria. Throughout her travels, Honoria kept journals in which she described life and culture in her new country, a world apart from home in Ireland, as well as personal messages and thoughts addressed to Henry, who regularly read her journal. At other times, she wrote for her son at school in England, pointing out items of interest to a child, accompanied by sketches, family anecdotes, and the occasional motherly encouragement about his studies and future.
Honoria revelled in her new life in India with Henry and their children, scorning the tedium and boredom that was the lot of most European women, and preferring travel in primitive and sometimes dangerous conditions. She was the first white woman to visit Kashmir and the first to live in Nepal, a country which guarded its independence fiercely.
Honoria's journals transport the reader to another age and culture, vividly depicting life in India in the years before the Mutiny.
